FOODMATTERS: MOVIE REVIEW

As usual, while on a Master Cleanse, I tend to obsess about food. Actually, I tend to focus on food most days, but the contrast of a Master Cleanse tends to make food feel like an obsession!

Last night I watched FoodMatters, a film about how food can heal all our chronic illnesses. If you have a chronic illness (an illness that lasts over time and requires daily medication or treatment) and haven't gone raw, vegan, vegetarian, and/or organic, you can't say that food doesn't heal. You haven't given food the chance to support your body's natural healing abilities. OK...start throwing the flames!

It's simple. It's inexpensive (compared to medications and other medical approaches). And it's something you can do yourself. Why don't more people invest their money and time into optimal food choices? Because at first it seems like a lot of work, it doesn't seem like fun and it can feel like punishment. We like our mindless doughnuts and our beers and our indulgent sugary snacks at 3 pm when we're feeling sleepy. It's a hell of a lot easier on the get-off-your-butt scale to just pop a pill than it is to gather organic produce and juice it.

If you take medication, you owe it to yourself to see this film. If you think you could feel better by changing your diet, you need to see this film. If you have any suspicion that the medical industry needs sick people to sustain their businesses, you must see this film. Healthy people are bad for the Sickness Business.

Now before you start jumping on me, there is a place for medicine. It's called the emergency room or services for acute illnesses: broken bones, food poisoning, dangerously high fevers, etc. But lifestyle illnesses are not treated in the emergency room. Let's make this clear: I am not a universal medical doctor hater. Good golly, my father and husband would disown me.

There are twelve parts to the film:

1. Ancient Wisdom - remember Hippocrates? "Let thy food be thy medicine."
2. How Old Is Your Food?  - most "fresh" food is a week old by the time it reaches the grocery store giving you only about 40% of its original nutrients
3. Raw Foods & Superfoods - what your body really, really wants
4. Supplements & Doctor Training - how many doctors do you know who had training in nutrition in medical school?
5. The Body's Own Healing Mechanism - get out of the stinkin' way, the body knows what to do (thank goodness)
6. Heart Disease - it's your choice, day after day after day
7. Drug Money - the Sickness Business is all about profit
8. Depression & Mental Illness - malnutrition seems to be a root cause
9. Detoxification & Weight Loss - what is is exactly that you're carrying around that you don't need?
10. Cancer - give cleansing a chance
11. A Whole New Paradigm - change your mind and change your life
12. A Better Alternative - all the answers, options and resources are out there - now go find them! (hint: they're not wearing white lab coats!)

Quoting from the trailer: "It's a choice. You don't have to be sick." I know this statement will trigger resentment from many readers who are dealing with real issues, but I implore to you to consider watching this movie, heeding the advice, reading up and researching the works of those presenting in the film.

Food matters. Period. If you are feeding yourself substandard foodstuffs, then expect substandard health in return. Don't be surprised. But if you want to live optimally for as long as you can comfortably, then study your food. Save yourself!
