Oh, but let's not forget that resveratrol always existed in certain natural, whole foods before it was ever encapsulated in a pill or bottled by a winery. And, of course, you'd have to "drink 1,000 bottles of wine a day" to equal the resveratrol level found in one magic, amazing, miracle, proprietary capsule sold by
Sirtris, a company now owned by
GlaxoSmithKlien, who stands to make BILLIONS of dollars off of people who are too damn lazy to change their lifestyles. Argh! whew.....ok chill, Carla.
When I first caught wind of the resveratrol craze, I felt that it simply was justification for drinking wine. If you like to drink wine, fine, but don't do it and say that you drink it "for your health." Really, the alcohol (ie: sugar) will negate any anti-aging properties in the wine. So, you may live longer with cirrhosis of the liver. Great. And stained teeth. Lovely.
The scientists in the video are interested in stopping or reversing LIFESTYLE diseases. Their studies have reported to slow or stop diabetes 2, high blood pressure, Alzheimer's and cancer. Well, isn't that just fabulous? These diseases are already preventable. Old age is already achievable. What these companies are really saying is "Go ahead, abuse your body. When you get sick, we have your cure. But your health is going to cost you your wallet. YAY us!"
Caution arises when a laboratory of scientists extract one element of a natural substance (the resveratrol from the grape skins) then concentrates it. Surely they'll put their twist on it too...a preservative, an additive or a dye. Nature never intended you to ingest resveratrol without the thousands of other synergistic elements contained in the whole grape.
While I believe in supplementation and
orthomolecular medicine during times of stress and need, I first believe in cleaning up your diet and eventually requiring no medication nor supplementation. If you have type 2 diabetes and don't change your diet, no amount of resveratrol is going to save you.
Here are some foods which naturally contain resveratrol: red grapes, blueberries, mulberries, raw peanuts, peanut butter (preferable raw, organic and samonella free ;o), cranberries, bilberries, and muscadine grapes. While the concentrations may be much lower per serving, eating wholesome foods for life will serve you better than an isolated, concentrated, laboratory created pill.
While there has not been extensive human research with resveratrol yet, there is anecdotal information collecting.
Here is one site that attributes the following side effects to resveratrol: tendonitis pain, arthritic joint pain, stomach pain and diarrhea, numbness, the jitters and decreased appetite.
Here's
the longer 60 Minutes video that launches with news of resveratrol but leads into the calorie restriction diet. If you have a lifestyle disease, here is one proven and natural way to reverse your illness. Eating a raw food diet will most likely land you in the calorie restriction zone.
It's the same old game: a pill for every ill. If you want to live long, healthy lives do whatever it is you can to stay AWAY from pills. Study your food. Educate yourself about nutrition. PREVENT disease.
Live Light, xo-C.
I forgot to mention that resveratrol is also found in spruce and eucalyptus - so essential oil users, load up! Be sure to use only therapeutic grade essential oils to achieve therapeutic results. One such brand is http://www.YoungLiving.us

The wonder ingredient in wine is indeed resveratrol. The current studies performed by researchers have shown great promise for resveratrol treating the diseases of aging. There are numerous articles that I have linked to at my website - http://resveratrol.webiage.com - that document the findings for the potential health benefits in treating heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and other diseases.
Concerning supplements containing a high quality and potency of resveratrol that is necessary to achieve the dosage levels utilized in the lab tests, there is a new product called Vivix. Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S. (http://www.shaklee.com/index.shtml), has produced a liquid resveratrol supplement that is 10 times stronger than resveratrol alone due to its patented formulation of polyphenols.
Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Oz are both users and promoters of Shaklee products and Oprah has featured Roger Barnett, Chairman and CEO of Shaklee (http://www.shaklee.com/company_lead_ceo.shtml), on her show.
So for a highly researched resveratrol supplement of exceptional quality, please visit - http://www.shaklee.net/davidhynes/vivix - to discover more about Vivix.

Carla, I don't disagree with your post at all. In fact, resveratrol is not the wonder drug behind red wine. It is not even the antioxidant of the highest concentration. And while some say the alcohol in red wine negates the health effects, there are quite a few studies proving the health benefits of alcohol in general. Like sauerkraut, alcohol is the result of fermentation, a process that proves highly beneficial to the human digestive tract.
One thing that can't be denied is the "French Paradox". It may not be known what causes the health benefits, red wine can not be denied. Whether you drink wine or take a resveratrol supplement, oxidation is still your enemy when it comes to efficacy. If you drink wine for "health" make sure you're drinking the boxed kind. And if you're taking a supplement, make sure it's a pill in a blister pack or a powder in individual packets.
You can learn more about resveratrol (and wine's other antioxidants) at http://www.benefits-of-resveratrol.com Thanks for providing more great input on the new "miracle" called Resveratrol. People need to know it's not a miracle, and no matter what you do, you can't age less than a day at a time.

I had no idea that peanuts also contain resveratrol. There is no such thing as a medical miracle, the only maker of miracles is Him upstairs. Breakthrough is a better word.

I don't trust resveratrol first until I found out that my recent food supplement contains some knotweed extract. It gets me out of stress.
